When I first saw the hot cocoa bombs videos going viral on Tik Tok, I just knew that I had found the craze for me. I love anything fun, and they look like a blast in a glass. One of the best thing about making these Instant Pot hot cocoa bombs is that even your kids can help you make them.  My sister helped me make some of these and she said “these are the bomb”. Angela is sooooo the 90s love child!

Before you can make these delicious treats you will need to purchase a chocolate mold.  Here’s a link to the one that I used to make my hot cocoa bombs.

Frequently Asked Questions About Instant Pot Hot Cocoa Bombs

What is a Hot Cocoa Bomb?

A hot cocoa bomb is a hollow chocolate shell that is stuffed full of hot cocoa mix, marshmallows, and any other flavor additions that you feel like adding to your bomb. These bombs are simple to make and I love how creative that I can be with them.

You can use all different types of melting chocolates to make your own variations and flavors! I’m using salted caramel chips making my Instant Pot hot cocoa bomb. It’s totally one of my favorite flavors! Anything chocolate and caramel is a winner to me.

You can also put more than just marshmallows in them! You can add sprinkles, fudge sauce, caramel sauce, and maybe even some instant coffee.

How do You use Hot Cocoa Bombs?

Now  this is the fun part. Once you make your cocoa bomb place the bomb inside a mug, and then pour 1 1/2 – 2 cups of warm milk over top of your bomb. How much milk you use is a personal preference. If you want it super chocolately and rich tasting, then use a cup of milk, which is about 8 ounces

The chocolate shell will start to melt and then the marshmallows and hot cocoa mix will burst out of the shell making a dramatic entry for your cup of hot cocoa. Adult and kids alike will be mesmerized by watching them “explode” in the milk.  Once your hot cocoa bombs have melted give your cup a good stir and enjoy.

How do I use my Instant Pot as a double boiler

To use your instant Pot as a double boiler you will need:

  • 6 Qt (or larger) Instant Pot
  • Aluminum foil or a butterfly clip (You’ll fold the aluminum foil over a few times to create a nice wedge, as seen below in photo). However, it needs to be AT LEAST 3″ in length to bend over your Instant Pot rim.
  • Glass or Metal mixing bowl that fits across your liner but does not touch the bottom of your Instant Pot liner.
  • Whisk or rubber spatula
  • Water

With using foil, you would want almost a 1/4″ amount of space between the bowl and your Instant Pot.

Same principal with using a butterfly clip attached to your Instant Pot liner. It keeps space between bowl and your Instant Pot.

Here’s how to melt your candy melts using your Instant Pot.

  • Place 2 cups of water inside your Instant Pot and set a 3qt metal or glass bowl on top.
  • Press the Sauté function on your Instant Pot.  Make that your setting is on MORE.
  • Add your candy melts  to the mixing bowl.
  • Whisk until chocolate has melted completely about 5 minutes.

How Do You Store Hot Cocoa Bombs

Store your hot cocoa bombs  in an airtight container  in a cool, dry location for up to two weeks. You can also store them in the freezer to keep them for two months. Be sure to keep your cocoa bombs tightly sealed while in your freezer.

This Instant Pot hot cocoa bomb recipe is one you’ll want to make more than once! Give them as a gift, keep for yourself, or enjoy making them for others to buy from you! It’s a great side business to start!

Here’s What You Need

If you will note, I am using chocolate candy melts. Why? Because it’s so much easier to work with; however, you can use chocolate chips and higher end pieces of chocolate, and you will end up with the same result. The only issue is that you have to make sure that you are tempering your chocolate.

When you use chocolate candy melts, you don’t have to worry about tempering it. The chocolate crystals have already been broken down for you. Also, they are much more pliable, and you won’t have to worry too much about scorching your chocolate and starting from scratch.

Here’s How To Make Them

  • Place 2 cups of water inside your Instant Pot and set a 3qt metal or glass bowl on top.
  • Press the Sauté function on your Instant Pot.  Make that your setting is on MORE.
  • Add your candy melts to the mixing bowl.
  • Whisk until chocolate has melted completely about 5 minutes.
  • Place 2 tbsp melted candy melt into one half of a bomb mold and, using the bottom of your tablespoon measuring spoon, press the chocolate up the sides of the mold, keeping it thick but even. Repeat with 12 bomb mold halves.
  • Place the chocolate filled bomb molds into the freezer for 5 minutes.
  • Remove molds from the freezer and gently tap the sides of the mold, pressing on one side of the chocolate to make the chocolate slid out of the mold.
  • Fill 6 of the molds with 2 tbsp hot chocolate mix and 6-8 mini marshmallows.
  • Place remaining melted candy melts into a piping bag with a tiny tip and pipe a thin line of candy melts on the rim of one of the filled molds. If you don’t have a piping bag, then use a warm plate and gently rub the top of the bomb until it starts to melt a little bit. Place on bottom half, and this will act as the “chocolate glue” you need.
  • Immediately press an empty cup to the top of the one with the rim covered in melted candy melts. This will join the two halves of the hot cocoa bomb.
  • Drizzle the remaining candy melts over the assembled hot cocoa bombs then immediately follow by dusting with the cocoa powder.
  • Place the hot cocoa bombs into the freezer for 5 minutes to get them to set, then remove and store in an airtight container until you’re ready to use.
  • To use the hot cocoa bombs, place them in a mug and pour 1 1/2 – 2 cups hot milk over the top. Stir until the hot cocoa bombs are completely melted and enjoy!

  1. These look like great gifts! I have 2 questions. What size mold did you use since I see they come in different sizes? How many bombs does the recipe make? Thank you.

    1. I’m so sorry, I used the large size (2.37″ in diameter), and then I have it listed in the recipe card, but it will make 6 delicious hot cocoa bombs! YUM! Enjoy!
