๐ŸŒŸ WHY I LOVE GRINCH OREO BALLS

Christmas Grinch treats are some of my favorite recipes during the holiday season. After making these Grinch Christmas cookies, I knew I had to adapt my Reindeer Oreo balls and add a Grinch theme to the recipe.

Grinch-themed treats are loved by kids and adults alike. There’s no way that these will go unappreciated. In fact, I doubt you’ll have any leftovers!

These Grinch Oreo truffles can be adapted to suit your taste and decorating preferences. Change the velvet Oreos to your favorite flavor and add green sprinkles for added fun! Check out even more suggested variations below.

๐Ÿฝ KEY INGREDIENTS

Ingredients for Grinch Oreo balls on a marble countertop.

Red velvet Oreos – This equals about two 12.2 ounce packages or 44 cookies. Regular Oreo cookies can be used if you can’t source the red velvet variety.
Cream cheese – Softened at room temperature.
Light green candy melts – I’ve used Melt โ€˜Ems brand.
Red heart sprinkles – You can source the candy hearts here.

Swaps

Oreos – Oreos are known for making delicious treat balls, but you could use another type of sandwich cookie.

Gluten-free – Regular Oreos are not gluten-free, but they do offer gluten-free Oreos if you require.

๐Ÿฅฃ EQUIPMENT

You’ll need a baking tray, parchment paper, a food processor, a hand mixer, a large mixing bowl, a cookie scoop, piping bag, and a double boiler.

๐Ÿ”ช HOW TO MAKE

Whip up a batch of these bright and cheerful Grinch Oreo balls with simple step-by-step instructions and helpful cooking tips. Even better is the fact that there’s no baking involved!

Preparations

Line a baking tray with parchment paper and crumb the Oreos in a food processor.

Cooking Instructions

Step 1
Combine the softened cream cheese and Oreo crumbs in a mixing bowl until fully combined.

Glass mixing bowl with cream cheese and Oreo crumbs.

Step 2
Use a cookie scoop to measure out the mixture and roll it into smooth balls. Place these balls on the baking tray and chill in the fridge for 2 hours.

Step 3
Melt the green candy melts in a double boiler over low heat or in a microwave-safe bowl in the microwave. Stir every 30 seconds until melted and smooth. Remove the Oreo balls from the fridge and dip each one into the melted chocolate, tapping the sides of the bowl gently to shake off excess chocolate. Place the balls back onto the baking tray.

Step 4
Immediately decorate the Oreo balls by drizzling the remaining melted green chocolate over the Oreo balls and sticking on the red candy hearts. Allow the Oreo ball coating to set before serving.

๐Ÿ’ญ COOKING TIPS

Chilling the Grinch truffles will help keep the balls firm so that they hold their shape better and donโ€™t fall apart when dipped into the melted candy melts.

Keep the assembled Oreo balls refrigerated until youโ€™re ready to serve them. If the balls sit at room temperature for an extended period of time, the chocolate coating will start to crack.

If you use double-stuffed Oreos, reduce the amount of cream cheese.

I prefer using the double-boiler method for melting the candy melts as the mixture can easily seize in the microwave.

๐Ÿ“– RECIPE VARIATIONS

These Grinch Oreo balls are adorable as they are, but I’ve listed a few ways that you could easily adapt this no-bake recipe.

VARIATION 1

Add vanilla extract or almond extract for an added depth of flavor in these Grinch truffles.

VARIATION 2

Use Golden Oreos or regular Oreos instead of red velvet Oreos. You could also use other red velvet cookies. Peppermint Oreos, Mint Oreos, Gingerbread Oreos, Peanut Butter Oreos, and Java Chip Oreos are also options.

VARIATION 3

Insert a lollipop stick into the bottom of each Grinch Oreo ball while assembling. It’s a convenient way for guests to hold these treats without getting their hands messy, similar to a cake pop.

VARIATION 4

The drizzle on these Grinch Christmas treats is optional. You could add the candy hearts on the balls immediately after they have been coated.

VARIATION 5

Green sanding sugar or green sprinkles would be a lovely addition to these Grinch Oreo balls.

๐Ÿฅ— WHAT TO SERVE WITH GRINCH OREO BALLS

These Grinch Oreo balls will add festive cheer to any holiday dessert table. Here are two ways I like to enjoy these Christmas treats:

Ice cream

Serve these Grinch Oreo balls with a bowl of vanilla ice cream for dessert.

Hot Beverages

Enjoy as a sweet holiday treat with your favorite hot beverage – hot chocolate, coffee, tea, or eggnog.

๐Ÿ™‹ FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A FOOD PROCESSOR?

You can still make these Grinch Oreo balls without a food processor, it’s just going to take a little extra muscle strength. Crush the Oreo cookies to a fine texture by adding them to a Ziploc bag and crushing them with a rolling pin.

WILL I NEED TO ADD OIL TO THE MELTED CANDY MELTS?

No. You would only need to do this if you were using regular chocolate.

WHY ARE MY GRINCH OREO BALLS FALLING APART?

Your Oreo balls will fall apart if the Oreo cookies haven’t been processed enough into a fine texture.

๐ŸงŠ STORING AND โ™จ๏ธ REHEATING

FRIDGE

These Grinch Christmas treats can be stored in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 5 days. I like to line the bottom of the container with parchment paper to prevent the chocolate-coated balls from sticking.

You should also add a layer of wax or parchment paper between stacked Oreo balls in storage.

FREEZER

Freeze the balls on a parchment paper-lined baking sheet for 1-2 hours so that they harden, and then transfer them to an airtight container or a Ziploc bag.

Thaw the frozen Grinch Oreo truffles in the fridge for a few hours before serving.

Grinch Oreo Balls

Grinch Oreo Balls

These Grinch Oreo balls are loaded with cream cheese and crushed velvet Oreos with a bright green chocolate coating and candy hearts! These are perfect for your Christmas dessert table or as cute holiday gifts!

Prep Time 1 hour
Additional Time 2 hours
Total Time 3 hours

Ingredients

  • Two 12.2 ounce packages Red Velvet Oreos (44 cookies)
  • 8 ounce block cream cheese, softened to room temperature
  • 15 ounces light green candy melts (I used Melt โ€˜Ems brand), divided
  • Red heart sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Line a baking tray with parchment and set it aside. Blend the Oreo cookies into fine crumbs using a food processor or blender.
  2. In a large mixing bowl with a hand mixer on high speed, beat the softened cream cheese until smooth. Add the Oreo crumbs and mix together until well combined.
  3. Using a 1.5” cookie scoop, make even sized balls and roll it together in the palms or your hands until smooth. Place onto the prepared baking tray and refrigerate for 2 hours. Chilling the balls will help them keep their shape when dipping into the melts.
  4. Set aside ½-¾ cup of the light green candy melt pieces to use later for drizzle if desired. Prepare a double boiler over low heat or use a candy melting pot and melt the remaining light green wafers until smooth. Stir every minute to ensure it is heating evenly.
  5. Dip each ball one at a time into the melts and remove it with a fork. Tap the fork on the edge of the double boiler or pot to remove any excess coating. Place onto the prepared baking tray and repeat with the rest of the balls.
  6. Place ½ cup of the set aside candy melts into a microwave safe piping bag, twist it shut, and melt it in the microwave on a low or defrost setting until fully melted and smooth. Massage the bag every 2 minutes to ensure it is melting evenly.
  7. Snip a small piece of the tip off of the piping bag and drizzle over the coated balls, four at a time. Immediately top with a red heart sprinkle before the drizzle sets completely.
  8. Allow the coating to fully set before serving. You can place them in the refrigerator to help them harden faster. Enjoy!

Notes

  • Any flavored Oreos will work in this recipe. Peppermint Oreos, Mint Oreos, Gingerbread Oreos, Peanut Butter Oreos, Java Chip Oreos, Golden Oreos, regular Oreos, etc.
  • Double Stuf or Mega Stuf Oreos can make the filling become too wet so you may want to use less cream cheese if using those varieties.
  • A double boiler or candy melts melting pot can help keep the coating at a desirable consistency and temperature. Microwaving can cause the candy melts to seize and thicken so be sure not to heat it on too high of a heat. A low or defrost setting works best. Stir it in 30 second intervals to ensure it heats evenly.
  • The drizzle is optional. You can opt to place the hearts directly onto the coated Oreo balls immediately after they have been dipped.
  • Add green sanding sugar or green sprinkles for a nice touch.
  • If you cannot find red heart sprinkles in store, you can order it online through Amazon or you can try checking stores such as Joann, Hobby Lobby, etc
