Natural Homemade Bug Spray

Sending your kids out to play in the summer months is the ultimate way to burn off energy and teach them that fun doesn’t always reside inside a video game console, but the potential for outdoor hazards does come to play in your decisions about where they go. You already have sunscreen on hand, but what about bug repellents that are safe and won’t harm your child in the process of eliminating bugs? Here is a great Natural Homemade Bug Spray that will be easy to whip up in your own kitchen, applies with a quick spray and will have the same effect the expensive and often chemical laden over the counter varieties contain.

NATURAL HOMEMADE BUG SPRAY

INGREDIENTS:

15 Drops Each of the Following Essential Oils: Citronella Oil, Tea Tree Oil, Eucalyptus Oil, Lavender Oil and Clove Oil

1 Cup Natural Witch Hazel

1 Cup Distilled or Boiled Water

OR

1 Cup Apple Cider Vinegar

10 Drops Each of the Following Essential Oils: Rosemary Oil, Lavender Oil, Citronella Oil

DIRECTIONS:

Mix all ingredients together and pour into small spray bottle.

Spritz light on exposed skin to repel bugs and pests.

 

The two options listed above for natural homemade bug spray have both worked great for our family in the past. One child has an extra sensitivity to witch hazel so we keep a bottle of each on hand so everyone is easily and naturally protected.

The lack of the harsh chemical DEET in these is just one of the reasons we have chosen to use natural repellents. While many products contain chemicals that have been deemed safe for human use, as a parent it is still always best to err on the side of caution and watch what our children come in contact with. Since these ingredients are all natural and typically do not harm the skin or cause problems if absorbed by the skin, they have become great healthy options for our family to use.
