Golden Oreo Turkey Cookies with Rolos

These Golden Oreo Rolo turkeys are the cutest thing on the Thanksgiving dessert table, and they don’t need an oven! A Golden Oreo becomes the turkey’s body, a fan of candy corn tucked into the cream filling makes the tail feathers, and a Rolo on top is the head, finished with candy eyes, a Reese’s Pieces beak, and a little red gobble. Melted chocolate candy melts glue the whole thing together.

They’re a fun addition to a Thanksgiving dessert tray, especially when you want to have something small alongside the pies to add some Fall flair without decorations. Set out the candy before you start, assemble one turkey at a time, and give the chocolate a chance to firm up before moving them. A few crooked eyes only make the flock more entertaining. Pair them with my Nutter Butter acorns for a whole tray of fall treats.

Prep Time: 20 minutes
Cook Time: No baking; briefly microwave the candy melts
Setting Time: 15 minutes
Total Time: About 35 minutes
Servings: 24 turkey cookies
Difficulty: Easy
Perfect For: Thanksgiving dessert trays, fall parties, and family decorating activities
Main Ingredients: Golden Oreos, Rolos, candy corn, chocolate candy melts, candy eyes, and Reese’s Pieces

Why You’ll Love This Recipe

  • No oven space needed: These are assembled from cookies and candy, which is useful when Thanksgiving dinner has taken over the kitchen. No need to heat the kitchen up!
  • One batch makes a whole flock: You’ll have 24 individual treats for a dessert tray or place settings.
  • No detailed icing work: The only icing decoration is a small red line beside the beak, which makes it fun to make with kids!
  • Easy to divide into jobs: One person can arrange feathers while another adds faces, with an adult handling the melted coating and candy cutting.

Why This Recipe Works

The candy corn feathers sit between the two cookie halves, giving them support instead of relying on a small dab of chocolate on the outside. Candy melts secure the feathers inside the cookie and attach the face on top.

Because the coating firms as it cools, there’s no need for a separate frosting recipe. The important part is attaching each piece while the melted coating is still soft, then letting the finished cookies rest flat until everything is secure.

The Ingredient Breakdown

  • Golden Oreos: Regular Oreos work too, if you want a more chocolate base. Golden Oreos give the turkey a lighter body, so the chocolate Rolo head pops. Twist them open gently; you want both halves whole, with the cream filling left on one side.
  • Rolos: These are the turkey heads. Unwrap them all before you start, since the candy melts set fast once you get going.
  • Candy corn: You need 4 pieces per turkey, so 96 total. Grab a few extras; some pieces always come out of the bag broken or misshapen.
  • Chocolate candy melts: Half a cup is enough to assemble all 24 turkeys. Chocolate chips aren’t a good swap here because they don’t set as firmly without tempering.
  • Reese’s Pieces: Cut 12 orange and yellow pieces in half with a sharp knife to make 24 beaks. Cut them on a cutting board, pressing straight down, so they split cleanly instead of shattering.
  • Red decorating icing: This is for the wattle, the red flap that hangs beside the beak. A tube of decorating icing with a small round tip gives you the most control.

How to Make Oreo Turkey Cookies

Step 1: Set Up Your Work Station

Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Gently twist each Golden Oreo open and lay the halves on the parchment, cream side up. Unwrap the Rolos, cut the Reese’s Pieces in half, and set out the candy corn and candy eyes. Once the candy melts are ready, you’ll need everything within reach.

Step 2: Melt the Candy Melts

Put the candy melts in a piping bag and stand the bag up in a mug or small bowl. Microwave at 50% power in 30-second bursts, squeezing the bag between each one, until the candy is completely smooth. Snip a very small piece off the tip with scissors. A small opening gives you much more control than a big one.

Step 3: Add the Tail Feathers

Pipe a little chocolate onto the cream filling of one Oreo half. Right away, press 4 pieces of candy corn into it in a fan shape, with the white tips pointing in toward the center of the cookie and the orange and yellow ends sticking out past the edge. Let enough of the candy corn stick out that you’ll still see the colors once the top cookie goes on. [DAVID: Did you fan the candy corn along one edge of the cookie, or all the way around?]

Step 4: Close the Cookie

Pipe a little more chocolate over the candy corn, around the white tips. Press the other Oreo half on top, gently, so the chocolate touches both sides and holds the feathers in place.

Step 5: Add the Rolo Head

Pipe a small dot of chocolate on top of the Oreo, near the edge opposite the feathers, and press a Rolo onto it right away.

Step 6: Give It a Face

Pipe two tiny dots of chocolate on the Rolo and press on the candy eyes. Pipe one more small dot below the eyes and attach half a Reese’s Piece, cut side down, for the beak. Then pipe a small squiggle of red decorating icing on one side of the beak for the wattle.

Step 7: Let Them Set

Repeat with the rest of the cookies. Let the turkeys sit for at least 15 minutes, until the chocolate is firm and nothing shifts when you pick one up.

Making Them Ahead & Storage Tips

These are a good make-ahead Thanksgiving project. Once they’re fully set, store them in a single layer in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 3 days. A single layer keeps the feathers and faces from getting knocked off. Wear food-safe gloves while you assemble if you want the Rolos to stay shiny and free of fingerprints.

More Thanksgiving Treats to Try

Add a few different flavors to the dessert table alongside your cookie turkeys:

If you make these Golden Oreo turkey cookies, leave a rating and tell me how your flock turned out. A turkey with crooked eyes still tastes good, so let those little personalities happen!

Oreo Turkey Cookie Questions

No. Leave the filling in place when you open the cookie. Add the melted coating and candy corn to the exposed inside, then replace the top.

The candy corn adds thickness between the cookie halves. Press lightly and let the melted coating hold the sandwich together instead of trying to squeeze it completely shut.

Melted chocolate chips can attach the decorations, but they may take longer to firm up and can soften more easily during handling. Candy melts are the more straightforward choice for this decorating method.

Not usually. The source recipe allows about 15 minutes at room temperature. In a warm kitchen, they may need more time, so check that the Rolo and feathers are secure before moving them.

Ingredients

  • 24 Golden Oreos
  • 24 Rolos unwrapped
  • 96 pieces candy corn
  • ½ cup chocolate candy melts
  • 48 candy eyes
  • 12 orange or yellow Reese’s Pieces cut in half
  • Red decorating icing as needed

Equipment

  • Two large baking sheets
  • Parchment Paper
  • Microwave-safe bowl
  • Piping bag, optional
  • Small spoon, if not using a piping bag
  • Knife and cutting board

Instructions

  1. Line two large baking sheets with parchment paper. Arrange the Oreos on the sheets and carefully twist each one open, leaving the filling in place.
  2. Melt the chocolate candy melts in a microwave-safe bowl at 50% power in short intervals, stirring between intervals until smooth. Follow the package heating directions. Transfer to a piping bag with a tiny opening, or use a small spoon.
  3. Working with one cookie at a time, pipe or spoon a little coating onto the upper half of the exposed inside. Immediately arrange four candy corn pieces in a fan, with the white tips pointing inward and the wider colored ends extending beyond the cookie.
  4. Add a little more coating over the white tips. Replace the cookie top and press gently to secure without cracking it.
  5. Add a dab of coating to the front of the cookie below the feathers. Immediately attach one Rolo, leaving a flat end facing outward.
  6. Use small dots of coating to attach two candy eyes and one Reese’s Pieces half to the Rolo, placing the candy half below the eyes as a beak.
  7. Pipe a small line of red decorating icing beside the beak to make the wattle.
  8. Repeat with the remaining cookies. Leave flat for about 15 minutes, or until the coating is firm and the decorations are secure, before serving or moving.

Notes

  • Work in small steps: Finish each turkey before starting the next so the coating doesn’t set before the candy is attached.
  • Rewarming: Reheat thickened coating gently in a microwave-safe bowl. Only microwave a piping bag if it is labeled suitable for that use.
  • Cookie swap: Classic chocolate Oreos can replace Golden Oreos.
  • Icing alternative: Attach small pieces of red Twizzlers or Airheads with melted coating.
  • Make ahead: Assemble the day before and store in a single layer in an airtight container in a cool, dry place. Allow the coating to set before covering.
