Instant Pot Sesame Garlic Wings

Instant Pot Sesame Garlic Wings are tender and juicy chicken wings cooked in a sweet sesame glaze and crisped up in the oven. 

I love wings in all flavors and varieties however a sweet glaze on my wings have a special place in my heart. This sweet and sticky sesame garlic glaze mixes together sweet and savory and makes for delicious dinner or even as an appetizer. 

Okay, okay, let’s be honest: there’s no need to bother with a side dish with these wings because you can eat them straight out of the oven and call it a meal.  We won’t judge.  I may or not have wanted to eat the entire batch alone.

Since I’ve learned to make wings in my Instant Pot I’ve stopped wanting to go out to my local wings restaurant because they taste better and are cheaper to make at home. My wallet really thanks me for the switch.

Can I use Frozen Chicken Wings?

Absolutely you can use frozen chicken wings to make these Instant Pot wings. However, if are not thawing them first you will need to add about three or four minutes to your pressure cooking time to ensure that the frozen wings cook all the way through to the center.  If you are using thawed wings you don’t need additional time.

What is the Difference between Coconut aminos and Soy sauce? 

Liquid aminos are made from fermented coconut sap.  Soy sauce however is made from fermented soybeans.  While both products include sodium, liquid aminos contain less sodium than traditional soy sauce.  Liquid aminos contain a lighter flavor than soy sauce however you can interchange the both of them when cooking.  If you are gluten free you will want to use liquid aminos as it is gluten free. 

How to trim your own chicken wings

Trim your own chicken wings at home to save money. Buying a whole wing in the fresh or frozen meat department is a lot cheaper than purchasing already cut up chicken wing pieces.  To make your own chicken wing pieces, place your whole wing on a cutting board.  And, using a sharp butcher knife cut in the joint or bend of the wing.  That will make your drumette.

Then cut off the thin wing tip off the flat of your wing and you have a perfectly shaped flat.  Either discard or freeze the tip of the wing.  Tips of wings are perfect for making chicken stock with. Save your tips in a bag in the freezer until you have enough to make a full batch of chicken stock.

Instant Pot Sesame Garlic Wings Recipe

  • 4-4½ lbs. chicken wings
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
  • 1 cup water
  • white sesame seeds, for garnish
  • 1/4 cup coconut aminos (or soy sauce if not gluten free)
  • 2 tablespoon sesame oil
  • 3 tablespoon honey, local is best
  • 1 tablespoon unsalted butter
  • 2 teaspoons fresh ginger, very finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

How To Make Instant Pot Sesame Garlic Wings

  1. Season wings with salt and black pepper, to taste. Place metal trivet inside Instant Pot® and add one cup of water. Arrange seasoned wings on top of the trivet before securing the cover in place. Switch the vent to “Sealing” and set the “Manual” setting to 8 minutes.
  2. To prepare the sesame garlic sauce, heat the coconut aminos, sesame oil, honey, butter, ginger, and garlic powder in a small saucepan over medium heat. Cook, stirring frequently, until butter is melted and the mixture is thoroughly combined. Remove from heat and set aside. 
  3. When cooking time on Instant Pot® is complete, allow pressure to naturally release for 10 minutes, then do a quick release for any remaining steam. Remove the lid and transfer the wings to a large bowl. Set aside and cool slightly.
  4. Meanwhile, position top oven rack in the top position and pre-heat broiler to high. Line a large, rimmed baking sheet with aluminum foil and place a wire cooling rack on top. Set aside.
  5. Pour 1/3 of the sesame garlic sauce on top of the wings and toss to coat. Transfer the wings to the wire rack on the prepared baking sheet and place under the broiler for 3-4 minutes or until the wings start to get crispy and develop some color. Turn the wings and repeat on the remaining side.
  6. Remove from the oven and toss the wings with half of the remaining sesame garlic sauce. Sprinkle with white sesame seeds and serve immediately with the remaining sauce on the side. Enjoy!

Note: This recipe is written for fresh or thawed wings. If using frozen wings, add 3-4 minutes to the active cook time.
