WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CHRISTMAS TRUFFLES
If you’re looking for a decadent holiday treat that requires minimal ingredients then these Christmas truffles are ideal! They are rich and chocolatey and can be decorated whichever way you prefer. Keep them in the fridge before serving to friends and guests over the holiday season! OF course, you can always make my Oreo chocolate fluff salad!
HOW SHOULD I STORE CHRISTMAS TRUFFLES?
While these Christmas truffles can be enjoyed at rom temperature, it’s best that they be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator when not served. They will last for up to 2 weeks in the fridge.
You can also freeze these Christmas truffles for up to 1-2 months and then allow them to soften slightly in the fridge before serving.
Keep in mind that the edible decorations such as chopped nuts and sprinkles may become soft through extended storage.
WHAT TYPE OF CHOCOLATE WORKS BEST FOR THESE CHRISTMAS TRUFFLES?
The type of chocolate used when making your Christmas truffles is very important as it can have quite an impact on the outcome of the truffles. It’s always best to use high-quality chocolate bars such as Ghirardelli semi-sweet chocolate bars, or Baker’s and Scharffen Berger brands.
Avoid using chocolate chips or regular chocolate snacking bars as these have added ingredients that will affect the consistency of the truffles.
Apart from the quality of the chocolate used, feel free to use a combination of dark chocolate and milk chocolate or stick to one type only.
CAN I USE HALF AND HALF OR MILK INSTEAD OF CREAM?
No, I don’t suggest using half and half or milk as an alternative to the double cream called for in this recipe. The double cream provides a richness and silky consistency that can be replicated by half and half or milk.
WHAT VARIATIONS CAN I MAKE TO THESE CHRISTMAS TRUFFLES?
- Instead of chopped nuts, coat these Christmas truffles with bright holiday sprinkles, sanding sugar, or crushed candy canes. Finely chopped dried fruit such as cranberries would also be delicious.
- Add a food flavoring to your holiday truffles such as almond extract, vanilla extract, or peppermint extract.
- Melt some white chocolate melting wafers and add red and green food coloring to it. Drizzle the red and green chocolate over the set truffles for extra festive decoration!
TIPS FOR MAKING CHRISTMAS TRUFFLES
- Make sure to finely chop the chocolate so that it melts quickly when combined with the hot cream.
- When chilling the chocolate cream mixture in the fridge, cover the bowl with plastic wrap but ensure that the plastic wrap is touching the surface of the mixture so that no water from condensation in the fridge mixes into the chocolate cream mixture.
- If the truffle mixture becomes too sticky while handling, pop it into the freezer for a few minutes and then continue. It’s important to work fast when rolling the truffle balls as the heat from your hands will make the mixture soft and sticky.
A regular teaspoon can be used to measure the truffle balls or you can use a small cookie scoop for uniform-sized truffle balls.
