Chocolate Marshmallow Snowballs

Chocolate Marshmallow Snowballs are adorable holiday treats that turn a mug of hot milk into a decadent beverage. Lollipop sticks or cake pop sticks are inserted into regular white marshmallows, dipped in melted dark chocolate, and decorated with white hundreds and thousands.

WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT CHOCOLATE MARSHMALLOW SNOWBALLS

While chocolate marshmallow snowballs may look like an expensive treat, they’re incredibly easy to make and only require a few basic ingredients, most of which you’re likely to already have in your pantry.

Adding a lollipop stick or skewer into each marshmallow before coating it in chocolate and decorating with hundreds and thousands makes the assembly of these treats that much easier and will give you something to hold when stirring into a hot mug of milk!

The holiday treats are perfect for handing out at parties or to gift to friends and family!

HOW SHOULD I STORE THESE SNOWBALL DIPPERS?

These chocolate marshmallow snowballs can be stored in an airtight container at room temperature for up to 7 days. You can also store them in the refrigerator, but I prefer not to since the condensation from the fridge can affect the sprinkles.

These treats can also be frozen for up to 2 months. Double-wrap them to prevent moisture from getting in.

WHAT KIND OF CHOCOLATE WORKS BEST FOR THESE TREATS?

The type of chocolate used when making your snowball dippers is very important as it can have quite an impact on the outcome of the treats.  It’s always best to use high-quality chocolate bars.

Avoid using chocolate chips or regular chocolate snacking bars, as these have added ingredients that will affect the consistency of the coated marshmallows.

Apart from the quality of the chocolate used, feel free to use a combination of dark chocolate and milk chocolate or stick to one type only.

WHAT VARIATIONS CAN I MAKE TO CHOCOLATE MARSHMALLOW SNOWBALLS?

  • Instead of dipping the chocolate-coated marshmallows into white hundreds and thousands, dip them into rainbow sprinkles, crushed candy canes, sanding sugar, chopped nuts, or green and red sprinkles.
  • Add a food flavoring to the melted chocolate, such as peppermint extract, almond, or vanilla extract.
  • Melt white chocolate melting wafers and drizzle over the dark chocolate-coated marshmallows instead of the white hundreds and thousands. You can do the same with red and green melting wafers.
  • If you don’t have white marshmallows, use pink marshmallows or a combination of white and pink.
  • Make mini chocolate marshmallow snowballs with mini marshmallows and toothpicks instead of lollipop sticks.
  • Instead of using cake pop sticks or lollipop sticks, insert candy canes into the marshmallows.

HOW SHOULD I SERVE CHOCOLATE MARSHMALLOW SNOWBALLS?

These chocolate marshmallow snowballs can be enjoyed as bite-size treats, but the best way to serve these snowball dippers is with a hot mug of milk.

Like plain chocolate dippers or hot chocolate bombs, dip these chocolate marshmallow snowballs into a mug of hot milk, stirring as the chocolate and marshmallow start to dissolve into the milky mixture, creating a decadent holiday beverage!

TIPS FOR MAKING CHOCOLATE MARSHMALLOW SNOWBALLS

  • Make sure to chop the chocolate into fine pieces, so it melts quickly and smoothly.
  • You can also melt the chocolate in the microwave. Add the chocolate to a microwave-safe bowl and heat the chocolate for 10-15 second intervals, stirring the chocolate well between intervals. Be careful not to burn the chocolate otherwise you will have to throw the chocolate away and start again.
  • You will need to work fairly quickly when coating the marshmallows in chocolate and adding the sprinkles while the chocolate is still semi-wet. If you take too long, the chocolate will thicken and harden. Ensure the preparation work of inserting the lollipop sticks into the marshmallows is done before melting the chocolate.

Christmas Marshmallow Snowballs

These Christmas chocolate marshmallow snowballs are a fun and adorable holiday treat!

Ingredients

  • 150g (1 cup) bar dark chocolate , broken into chunks
  • 10 fat white marshmallows
  • 10 lollipops or cake pop sticks, to serve
  • almond slivers, minced
  • Holiday Sprinkles

Instructions

  1. Bring a pan of water to a simmer over a low heat. Put the chocolate in a heatproof bowl and sit it on top of the pan, making sure that the water doesn’t touch the bottom of the bowl, and gently melt the chocolate.
  2. Push a lollipop or cake pop stick into each marshmallow. Check the chocolate is melted completely by giving it a stir, then scrape it into a smaller bowl. Tip the white sprinkles into another small bowl. Put a wire rack next to the bowl of chocolate and a sheet of baking parchment next to the bowl of sprinkles.
  3. Holding the end of a stick, dip a marshmallow into the chocolate so that it is completely coated. Lift it out, but hold it over the bowl to allow the extra chocolate to drip back in, then put it on the wire rack. Dunk the marshmallows, one by one, then line them up on the wire rack in the order that you dunked them.
  4. Pick up the first marshmallow you dunked and dip into the sprinkles to completely coat. Sit the snowball marshmallow on the baking parchment. Continue to dip and coat the marshmallows, working along the line so that you cover them in sprinkles in the same order that you dunked them in chocolate. When all the marshmallows are covered, leave them on the baking parchment until they are set.
  5. You can now wrap the marshmallows in cellophane and tie with ribbons if you’re giving them as a present. Alternatively, if you want to enjoy them right away, warm 1 mug of milk – in a microwave or saucepan – per snowball. Use your snowball as a stirrer in each mug of milk and keep stirring until all the sprinkles, chocolate and most of the marshmallow have melted. Check the milk is not too hot, then drink up. Will keep for up to 2 weeks in cellophane bags.
