What is Slow Cooker Cheesy Potatoes?

Cheesy Potatoes is a simple, classic side dish packed with the flavors of savory diced potatoes and smoked sausage and topped with melted cheddar cheese. I loved the addition of adding smoked sausage to give it a more robust flavor profile.

Love it a bit more spicy? You can totally add in some andouille or chorizo sausage!

How Do I Store Cheesy Potatoes?

You can store leftover Cheesy Potatoes in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3-5 days.

Can I Freeze Cheesy Potatoes?

I would not suggest freezing Cheesy Potatoes because the potato texture may turn soggy, watery, or grainy. But, if you do decide to freeze Cheesy Potatoes, place them in a freezer-safe container for up to 3 months. Then, thaw in the fridge overnight before you reheat.

Can I Prep Cheesy Potatoes in Advance?

Yes. If you are using freshly diced potatoes, keep them from turning brown by covering them in a water bowl. Then, store the submerged potatoes in a bowl in the fridge up to one day in advance. Serve prepared Cheesy Potatoes within three days.

Tips for Making Cheesy Potatoes

  • You can use chopped fresh potatoes to make Cheesy potatoes in the Slow Cooker.
  • Consider serving Cheesy Potatoes with crumbled pieces of bacon on top alongside your favorite green salad.
  • Add extra flavor to Cheesy Potatoes by blending an additional cheese with the cheddar, such as Colby Jack or Swiss Cheese.

Notes 

Before making these Slow Cooker Cheesy Potatoes, Consider these suggestions:

  • After you reach halfway through cooking time, pick up the insert and turn 180 degrees to ensure even cooking time on all sides. We want a nice golden brown color around the whole edge.
  • Preheat a large, heavy skillet over medium-high heat to make Cheesy Potatoes without a Slow Cooker. Add the cooking oil to the hot skillet and sear the sliced sausage first. Remove the sausage before adding the potatoes to the pan. Spread them into a single layer. Cook until the potatoes are golden brown on one side without stirring or turning. Repeat on the other side. Sprinkle the potatoes with salt and freshly ground black pepper to taste. Add the sausage and the remaining ingredients (minus the cheese) into the skillet when the potatoes are crisp and creamy. Once heated through, transfer to a covered casserole dish and cook at 350 degrees. After 25 minutes, sprinkle with cheese on top and bake uncovered for five more minutes.  
  • You can also prepare Cheesy Potatoes with fresh varieties, such as red, yellow, or russet potatoes.

Substitutions

  • Sour Cream– For a high-protein alternative to sour cream in Cheesy Potatoes, combine Greek yogurt in equal parts. 
  • Smoked Sausage– You can substitute turkey sausage in this Cheesy Potatoes Recipe. 
  • Cream of Chicken Soup– If you don’t have the cream of chicken soup on hand, you can use cream of mushroom soup, or make your own by combining 3 T butter, 3 T white flour, ½ cup chicken stock, and ½ cup milk. Melt butter in a saucepan and whisk in the flour. Then add the chicken stock and milk and bring the mixture to a boil. Cook until it thickens.

Ingredients

  • 1 lb full cooked smoked sausage sliced and seared
  • 1 – 16 oz container sour cream
  • 1 can 10 3/4 oz cream of chicken soup
  • 1 can 14.5 oz diced tomatoes
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
  • 1 – 30 oz bag frozen diced hash brown potatoes thawed
  • 2 cups mild cheddar cheese
  • Chopped fresh chives

Instructions

  • Lightly spray a 6-quart slow cooker with non-stick cooking oil
  • In large bowl, mix together cream of chicken soup and sour cream. Then add tomatoes, 1 cup cheese, cooked sausage, salt, pepper, and potatoes. Gently stir ingredients together.
  • Cover and cook on Low heat for 5-6 hours, or High heat setting 3 to 4 hours. After you reach halfway cooking time, pick up insert and turn 180 degrees. This will ensure even cooking time on all sides. We want a nice golden brown color around the whole edge.
  • Once almost done, add remaining cheese on top. Cover and cook until cheese has melted, about 15-20 minutes.

It is a training technique to where you give all-out, one hundred percent effort through quick, intense bursts of exercise, followed by short, sometimes active, recovery periods. With the Max Trainer, you're always active; however, you have a nice slow pace at the recovery time.

To be honest? I did not make it through the 14 minutes on my first 2 tries. It was hellish, and I thought I was dying…at times. But you know what? I made it through the 14 minutes on my 3rd try. I was bound and determined to get through it.

If I could stop smoking, then I can definitely get through 14 minutes. Gasping for breath in a pool of sweat, I did it!

The next thing to do for myself was to make sure that I stayed motivated. Here’s what you’re going to need:

Here’s what you need to do:

  1. Fill up the little cups with the pineapple guacamole until it comes out of the cup a little bit.
  2. Take a cracker and break it half. Make sure that the broken pieces of the cracker are facing in the same direction. Place them in the cup, and call it a day!

These are super fast to put together, which is great because guacamole tends to brown on top from the interaction with oxygen molecules. Since they’re so easy to make, you don’t have to make a ton of them at a time.

They’re definitely so much healthier than traditional pancakes, and they’re already slightly sweetened, so you probably won’t even have the need of a pure maple syrup on them. I also love that you can fill the center with fresh fruit and roll it up. Such a delight!

Ingredients:

  • 2 eggs
  • 1 ripe banana
  • ¼ teaspoon cinnamon

Directions:

  1. In a small bowl, mash banana with a fork. Add in eggs and cinnamon, and then mix well together until all ingredients are blended together.
  2. Prepare as you would traditional pancakes in a pan over medium heat. I use a non-stick spray to coat the pan with before cooking.

Avocado Toast

This is one of my personal favorite treats that I LOVE eating in the morning. You get the healthy oils from the avocado, and don’t have to worry about refined sugars being in the bread. I use a flourless sprouted wheat berry bread for my toast that I get from Trader Joe’s. It's so amazing!

All you do is cut open an avocado and slice it up over a piece of the bread I recommended. It’s so amazing, and super satisfying. What I REALLY love doing is sprinkling some of Trader Joe’s Chili Lime salt on top of the avocado to add some fun flavor to it. For more protein power, you can easily add slices of hardboiled eggs or smoked salmon on it.

Walking Dead recipes will get you ready for the plausible apocalypse of flesh eating walkers. The characters in The Walking Dead are in a strange spot, to say the very least. They have to deal with all of this end of the world stuff while still taking care of everyday needs, like bathing and clean clothes, and of course, appetite. Zombies are scary, but so is starvation. If you’re five seconds from being killed, your next meal may be your last. For those nights when you’re getting into the show, I found these great Walking Dead Recipes to get you into the action.

Okay, so you're going to have to have some kind of ingenuity in making more than just a camp fire to cook these walking dead recipes. If you have a camp set up with protective walls, like they did in Alexandria, then you have even more options, like an old school pressure cooker! If you find one of those, life is set. You can then make pressure cooker recipes over you open campfire.

While you’re out in the wilderness, you may need to make a few doves cry (sorry Prince). You will absolutely need to give these beautiful birds a chance to grace your table – er- stump in the woods. There is an amazing huckleberry barbecue sauce to take things up a notch.

Darryl, load up your bow! This would be a great recipe for celebrating the holidays in an abandoned house. After all, it isn’t like everyone ran off and took their grills. Run and scrounge up some wood, fire up the smoker, and eat like a king. Just make sure you keep watch, we don’t want the walkers coming in to get a bite.

Hmong Squirrel Stew

This delicious and beautiful stew can be made to put something hearty on your belly before you have to set out to find a new place to stay. The governor and his men come in the morning to blow up your prison, so eat quick.

Moose Meatballs

Though The Walking Dead takes place in Georgia, there is no reason to believe that survivors are not in the Northern states, hoping to find solace. If you’ve got the gun power, you can take down a moose and get him in your belly.

Venison Tenderloins

If only they had shot that deer instead of Carl. That kid has been through more injuries than you can wink at ( see what I did there??). After they got him patched up, they should have taken that deer out and grilled up these tasty tenderloins.

Let's face it. A major of your cooking will done on an open fire, or a make shift brick oven to bake food in. This campfire stew is totally going to hit the spot and provide you with the nutrients your body is going to need to out run the walkers that are hot on your tail. If you didn't find any tomato paste while you were on a run, you can always sun dry tomatoes and crush it into a paste to get the rich flavor you need.

Fishing was relaxing before the apocalypse. Now you’ll never know when your hook will bring up something other than the fish – and that something will be a bloated, gross nasty zombie. BUT if you can stomach the danger, you’ll reap a pretty rocking reward in these roasted whole rainbow trout.

Wild Harvest Pie

Meat, for whatever reason, may not always be available to you. I hope you learned how to scavenge, because you need to keep your strength up, or you’ll BECOME meat. These pies ought to do the trick.

Medicine is always a challenge in the wild, and this elderberry syrup can do the job of being both food and soothing a sore throat during an illness. If you’re lucky enough to shelter long enough to brew up a batch, keep it in your bag for when you’re on the run. Coughing in the middle of the night will get a walker breathing down your throat.

This is something I would fully expect to find cooling on the windowsill of Carol’s cabin. It’s a shame she’s always running off and isolating herself; those cooking skills are awfully vital to the crew. Maybe Darryl can convince her to save me a slice.

You may have thought you’d never taste pasta again, but this stinging nettle pasta can make it a reality again. Glen would have been glad to make a run to town to get you ingredients – if he were still here. The injustice!

When faced with the ugly reality of living in the wilderness, you are going to need some beauty in your life. Go for a walk outside that cabin and check on that livestock you’ve been trying to cultivate. Enjoy it while it lasts; like these stuffed hibiscus blossoms, it could all be gone when a hungry crowd shows up. And yes, you can actually make your own goat cheese!

Mustard Marinated Chicken

Yes, there will be chickens, cows, pigs, and all of that other type of live stock…for whatever the walkers didn't eat. This mustard chicken recipe is a great way to keep the flavor variety into your barely existent dietary intake of food, so make the most of what supplies you have around you! You should be able to find all of these ingredients if you ransack the right house!
