WHAT YOU SHOULD KNOW ABOUT THIS RECIPE

This dessert uses chocolate pudding, specifically the gluten-free KozyShack brand of ready-made chocolate pudding, which I highly recommend. Using this chocolate pudding adds to the convenience of this dessert recipe and reduces time.

I still recall my grandma making her homemade chocolate pudding, and while I can’t quite seem to replicate it, this store-bought chocolate pudding is a great substitute, adding delicious flavor and volume to these chocolate mousse cups!

CAN I STORE THESE CHOCOLATE MOUSSE CUPS?

I recommend storing the components of this dessert separately instead of storing fully assembled chocolate mousse cups.

The chocolate bowls are sensitive to temperature fluctuations and are best stored in an airtight container in a dry and cool place. Don’t store the chocolate cups in the fridge, as the condensation can affect the chocolate.

The chocolate pudding mixture and whipped cream can be stored in separate airtight containers and stored in the fridge for 1-2 days. Give these dessert components a good stir before assembling your chocolate mousse cups.

HOW SHOULD I SERVE THESE CHOCOLATE MOUSSE CUPS?

The little chocolate mousse cups can be enjoyed as a standalone dessert or alongside a scoop of ice cream.

They can also be added to a dessert board or platter for parties, bridal showers, baby showers, or high tea.

HOW CAN I VARY THESE CHOCOLATE MOUSSE CUPS?

  • Use white chocolate chips to make white chocolate bowls and a white chocolate pudding or vanilla pudding.
  • Use a different flavor of extract to match your preference or for specific occasions. For example, peppermint extract can be added to Christmas chocolate mousse cups. You could also experiment with almond extract, mint extract, orange, and orange extract.
  • Garnish these chocolate mousse cups with maraschino cherries, mini marshmallows, chopped nuts, or a drizzle of chocolate syrup.
  • Add some dissolved instant coffee to the chocolate pudding mixture for mocha mousse cups!

IS THIS DESSERT GLUTEN-FREE?

Yes! The KozyShack pudding is gluten-free, and the rest of the ingredients for this dessert are also gluten-free, making this sweet treat ideal for those with food allergies. You can always use other types of store bought pre-made chocolate puddings, but if you have a gluten sensitivity, then be sure to double check!

TIPS FOR MAKING CHOCOLATE MOUSSE CUPS

  • While you can melt the chocolate chips in the microwave, I find it better to use a double boiler with less risk of the chocolate overheating and seizing. Remember, if you scorch the chocolate, throw it out and start over.
  • I’ve used water balloons for the chocolate bowls as these are small enough to create the little chocolate cups desired. You may want to rinse the balloons prior to making this dessert in case they have been in storage for a while and to eliminate any residue and foreign particles from warehouse facilities.
  • I’ve used semi-sweet chocolate chips for the chocolate bowls, but dark chocolate chips are also suitable.

Cover the base of the balloons and half way up the balloon. You can make each one unique and make different sizes. Don’t worry about trying to a perfectionist!

Then there’s the make shift chocolate mousse! I call it make shift because chocolate mousse takes a little bit longer to make. This is super fast, easy, wholesome, and delicious.

Prep Time 15 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 20 minutes

Ingredients

  • 1 Cup of KozyShack chocolate pudding
  • 1 Cup of Semi Sweet Mini Chocolate chips (have a little extra to side for garnishment)
  • 1 Cup of Heavy Cream
  • 1 Teaspoon of vanilla extract
  • 1 Teaspoon of Sugar
  • 9 Water Balloons filled with air. No fully, just enough to create a small balloon about 1 1/2 to 2 inches wide.

Instructions

  • In a medium sized bowl, add heavy cream, vanilla extract, and sugar. Blend with a handheld mixer on medium. Continue until you see stiff peaks. Place in the fridge to keep chilled while doing the rest.
  • In a double boiler method, melt your chocolate chips. Don't get the chocolate too hot or you will scorch it. You can also melt in the microwave, I prefer in the double boil method.
  • On a piece of parchment paper, add a dollop of melted chocolate and spread into the size of a quarter. Make 9 chocolate dots.
  • Dip the balloons inside of the chocolate and spread around. Then place on top of chocolate dots.
  • Allow to cool and firm up. You can place in the fridge to help increase cooling time.
  • While mini chocolate bowls are cool, let's make a super quick chocolate mousse. In a medium sized bowl, add KozyShack Chocolate pudding and 1/2 cup of the whipped cream you made. Mix well and then place in the fridge.
  • Remove chocolate cups from fridge when they have completed firmed up. This will take about 15 minutes.
  • Pop the balloons and remove and balloon remnants.
  • Place the rest of the whipped cream in a pastry bag with a big star tip.
  • Fill each chocolate bowl with the make shift chocolate mousse. Top with whipped cream and mini chocolate chips!
